On 18th of December 2007, Marianne Nilsen, scientist at IRIS Biomiljø, defended her PhD thesis at the Norwegian College of Fishery Science, University of Tromsø.

First part was the compulsory lecture:
"Impact of fishing and climate change on the trophic structure of coastal marine ecosystems"

After this, Marianne defended her PhD thesis:

"Trophic interactions and the importance of macrobenthic invertebrate production in two Arctic fjord systems"

This is the first attempt that has been made to estimate the overall macrobenthic invertebrate community production in Norwegian waters
and shows that local biomass and production data for these organisms are important to assess their role as producers in fjords and coastal ecosystems.
