Cedefop, the European Centre for Vocational Training is running a project entitled Older workers and lifelong learning. For information on Cedefop see www.cedefop.europa.eu and www.trainingvillage.gr. This project is taking place in the framework of Cedra - Cedefop Research Arena.

The goal of the project is to moderate a network to examine the above theme. The International Research Institute of Stavanger (IRIS) is collaborating with Cedefop in moderating this network.

The first product of this network was a book - a reader on older workers and lifelong learning.

The title of the book is: "Promoting lifelong learning for older workers. An international overview"

The book was published in October 2006. A total of 24 researchers contributed to this reader. The book has a focus on European approaches and experiences. However, through contributions from scholars from other continents, Japan and the US and Australia, the European perspective can be viewed in a broader international context. The first chapter is available here. The book can be ordered from Cedefop.

An AGORA/seminar, which promoted dialogue between the above researchers and policy makers, took place in Cedefop, Thessaloniki on the 12.-13. October 2006. The seminar report and the papers/presentations are now available at the Cedefop website.

A highlight in 2006 was a symposium on the project at the 7th International Conference on HRD Research and Practice Across Europe, 22-24 Mai 2006, Tilburg, The Netherlands.

A new publication in 2007: "Innovative learning measures for older workers" - A new publication compiling examples of organisational, regional and/or national learning interventions promoting lifelong learning for older workers is under preparation in the network.

In 2007 some network members contributed to a roundtable at the 8th International Conference on HRD Research and Practice Across Europe, 27-29 June 2007, Oxford, UK.
