BECPELAG
IRIS & Akvamiljø participated in the ICES based workshop called Biological Effects of Contaminants in Pelagic Organisms (Becpelag). The intention behind the workshop is to find suitable parameters for monitoring negative effects on marine organisms from industrial pollution.

The workshop has been made possible through funding from several public and industrial sources in addition to self financed participation from many scientific institutions. These are universities and research institutes mainly from countries surrounding the North Sea. During first half of 2001, seven cruises were conducted covering the two study areas Statfjord oil field and the German Bight. Contaminants of concern were oil related discharges at Statfjord and general domestic and industrial pollution in the German Bight. The workshop comprises studies of plankton, fish (saithe, herring, mackerel) caught in the areas as well as studies of caged cod and blue mussels. Cages were located in gradients from presumed pollution sources at the respective study sites, Statfjord B platform and the river mouth of Elbe. The cages were on locations for approximately 6 weeks.

IRIS & Akvamiljø conducted analyses in-house as well as co-ordinated analyses performed by collaborators. The main focus of IRIS & Akvamiljø was the use of fish bile as an indicator of pollution.

Study areas in the Becpelag workshop, S1-S4 and G1-G4 are locations where cod and blue mussels where deployed

Metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were analysed by two methods, namely direct fluorescence and by GC-MS. Metals in bile have been analysed by ICP-MS. The results so far indicated that analyses of bile is a useful pollution indicator for both oil related discharges, as found at the Statfjord field and for domestic/ industrial pollution as found in the German Bight.

Work performed by our collaborators included antioxidant stress parameters carried out by University of Ancona, Italy, gene damage parameters carried out by University of Stockholm, Sweden and University of Plymouth, England, and immune system parameters by University of Bergen, Norway. The results from all the participants were presented at a meeting in Copenhagen, in August 2002.

A joint publication of all the biomarker and bioassay results is expected in early 2004.
