Proteomics

The field of proteomics (i.e. the study of proteins) is experiencing a rapid growth and development all over the world. To be part of this, IRIS Biomiljø has (as the first - and only group in Norway) invested in a ProteinChip Biomarker System from BIO-RAD A/S (I.e. SELDI TOF MS). This system is a powerful tool in proteomics, extensively used in clinical research areas to find single proteins or protein patterns that signal for example disease susceptibility or disease states.
At Biomiljø, ProteinChip SELDI technology has been used in the development of biomarker discovery and also in the search for new diagnostic biomarkers in aqua- and agriculture, human health (e.g. cancer), animal health (e.g. prion disease), plant research and environmental effect monitoring.
The SELDI technology’s high-throughput nature, allows large sample sets and hence potential for evaluation of individual variation with more robust statistical interpretation of results. A sample set of 200 would take months to analyze with conventional methods (2D-gels), we can do it in two days. A combination of bioinformatics and biochemometrics are then used to extract the best protein biomarker candidates. Selected candidate proteins are purified using various protein separation techniques, including chromatography. Finally, sequence and identity are obtained by tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). Laboratories at Biomiljø comprise state of the art instrumentation, and have recently invested in new tandem MS equipment for protein identification.

An overall objective for us is to establish a strong and creative network between research institutions and industry that work with proteins (medical, veterinary, environmental research, food/feed control, biological process control etc.) both locally, nationally and internationally.
